March Update 2023

The Nimbin Wayfinding Project is underway with the first on-road elements, the speed-humps, installed at the beginning of February. We are in the preliminary phase of procuring a detailed design for the off-road elements of the project – the Blister, The Green Bank Parklet and pedestrian link from Cullen Street to the Western Carpark – which will then be canvassed to the Nimbin Chamber of Commerce, Nimbin Community Centre and 7 Sibley Street for consideration and feedback. The landscape architect responsible for Rainbow Road Walking Track has been engaged for the project to ensure aesthetic continuity across the village.

Geotechnical investigations, surveying and utility locating have been completed to support the development the detailed design, and the project is scheduled for completion by mid-2023.

The project consists of four key elements:

Speed Humps:

These devices will be used to gather metrics to support a Local Area Traffic Management Plan, addressing pedestrian safety along Cullen Street. The inception for this aspect of the project came from feedback surrounding pedestrian safety and visibility when using the pedestrian crossing. We were unable to move the crossing as part of this trial-project, however, information gathered will be used to support a future shared-zone project for Cullen Street.

Blister Upgrades:

The Blister seating will be upgraded with serpentine style ferro-concrete seating, like that in Gaudi Park, Barcelona. The tables will be removed (looking for any community groups that might like to take them) and replaced with smaller, more open seating platforms. Shading options are being considered as part of the detailed design.

Green Bank Parklet:

The Green Bank Parklet will stimulate economic activity in a traditionally quieter pocket of the village. Is intended to be developed as a tourism focal point where you can take your picture with the Nimbin vista in the background and will speak, stylistically, to the Blister upgrades. The audio-sign from the Chamber of Commerce’s signage project will be incorporated into the design. Geotechnical investigations, surveying and utility locating have been completed in support of the development of the detailed design.

Pedestrian Link:

LCC have been in conversation with the Nimbin Community Centre regarding the transfer of the pedestrian right of way from NCCI to LCC. This was expressed as a preference for NCCI who no longer wish to be responsible for the walkway and would like to see it officiated as a walkway for the village. Stairs will replace the driveway access behind Birth and Beyond (accessibility options were explored but were unfeasible) and collapsible bollards will be placed along the section of the path that borders on the neighbouring properties. This will allow for occasional traffic such as larger trucks and unusual sized deliveries to pass through the area and allow for maintenance access to the rear of the Birth and Beyond building. Surveying is scheduled for completion in the coming weeks and LCC has engaged a legal professional to oversee the title transfer.
