Lismore City Council is inviting residents of The Channon to provide their final feedback on the proposed construction of a footpath along Standing Street.
Throughout the life of this project, Council has undertaken community consultation and received a wide range of views, both for and against the footpath. This is now the last opportunity for residents to have their say before a final decision is made.
Residents can complete the Preference Submission included at the bottom of this Your Say page and indicate one of two preferences:
- Proceed with construction of the footpath as per Option D (see below), or
- Not proceed with a footpath.
This consultation will be open for two weeks, Wednesday 24 September – Wednesday 8 October, 4.30pm. Feedback received during this period will be presented to Council, alongside the independent review report, to inform a final resolution.
Background:
Council engaged independent consultants, Point8, to review the proposed shared path connection along Standing Street. Their report identified the most suitable option within the scope of the existing funding. Funding for this project was secured through the NSW Government’s Get NSW Active initiative in 2022/23. This funding was granted on the basis of a direct connection between the footpath and The Channon Public School. The location cannot be moved away from the school without forfeiting the grant.
The original proposal was for a 180-metre shared path from Mill Street to The Channon Public School. Several design options were considered in response to community feedback. Following their review, Point8 recommended Option D as the preferred design. This option, referred to as Option D, proposes a shared path along the south-western side of Standing Street, linking the entrance to The Channon Public School with the General Store at the Mill Street intersection.
Option D has been recommended as the preferred design because it:
- Provides the most direct and intuitive connection between the school and the General Store.
- Aligns with relevant design standards and guidelines.
- Reduces safety risks compared to other designs.
- Presents the least complexity for construction.
- Meets the requirements of the Get NSW Active funding.
