What is an Urban Green Corridor?
An urban green corridor is an area of connected natural spaces, like parks, bushland, and waterways, within a city. These corridors allow wildlife to move safely through urban areas, support biodiversity, and provide green spaces for people to enjoy. The role of wildlife corridors in the conservation of biodiversity is widely recognised to reduce isolation, fragmentation, and degradation of native vegetation and wildlife habitats.
What is Bush Regeneration?
The Australian Association of Bush Regenerators defines bush regeneration as "the rehabilitation of bush from a weed affected or otherwise degraded area to a healthier community of native plants and animals", or “the practice of restoring bushland by reinstating and reinforcing the systems’ natural regeneration processes”.
Techniques involved in bush regeneration include weed control, planting, re-seeding and other biological and physical interventions which help the natural system regenerate. The use of these techniques is determined on a site by site basis, informed by understanding of the pre-clearing vegetation community and the current site conditions.
What is the Urban Green Corridors Plan?
The Urban Green Corridors Plan is an operational plan of Lismore City Council which sits under the Biodiversity Management Strategy. It aims to protect and restore wildlife corridors and bushland areas across Lismore, helping native plants and animals thrive in the city.
Why is the plan being reviewed?
The plan is being reviewed to ensure it’s still effective in supporting biodiversity and to make sure it reflects current needs, like addressing the changing climate and extreme weather events.
The purpose of the review is to gauge the effectiveness of the plan in achieving the objectives and actions stated in the plan, and to revise the plan for the best future outcomes. Are we achieving the stated outcomes and is the best available knowledge and techniques being employed? How can the next 10 years of work be best directed by the UGCP?
This is the first review of the UGCP and as such aims to identify and resolve gaps and ambiguities in the planned actions, including budgeting, service delivery, monitoring and reporting, as well as potential for expansion and barriers to implementation.
