  • PROTECT AGAINST MOSQUITOES AND REDUCE THE RISK OF DISEASES

Share on Facebook Share on Twitter Share on Linkedin Email this link
As floodwater is subsiding across Northern NSW, the North Coast Public Health Unit is reminding residents and visitors to protect themselves from mosquitoes.

In addition to Ross River and Barmah Forest viruses, NSW Health is also warning the public of more serious conditions carried by mosquitoes, following confirmation of two Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV) cases in NSW.

JEV can cause severe neurological illness with headache, convulsions and reduced consciousness in some cases.

To minimise the risk of mosquito bites:
    • Cover up as much as possible when outside. Wear light-coloured, loose-fitting clothing and covered footwear.
    • Use an effective repellent on all exposed skin. Re-apply repellent within a few hours, as protection wears off with perspiration. The best mosquito repellents contain Diethyl Toluamide (DEET) or Picaridin. Those containing oil of lemon eucalyptus also provide adequate protection.
    • Use mosquito coils outdoors. Devices that use light to attract and electrocute insects are not effective.
    • Cover all windows, doors, vents and other entrances with insect screens.
    • If staying in tents or caravans, use flyscreens on caravans and tents or sleep under mosquito nets.

    Nimbin Town water supply
Due to storm damage to Nimbin’s water supply, Level 3 Water Restrictions are still in effect for residents who are connected to water.
Restrictions are due to the damage to the pipes that deliver water from Nimbin weir to the storage holding dam. Council is exploring options to ensure supply prior, during and post the remediation phase. There is no current timeframe on when pipeline will be restored.
The implementation of water restrictions will enable Council to investigate and repair the infrastructure that has been damaged to ensure we can gain access and repair the Nimbin water supply.
To find out about what you can and cannot do under these restrictions go to https://lismore.nsw.gov.au/.../nimbin-placed-on-immediate....
    Nimbin Rural water supply
Due to the extensive flood damage to a rural water main, no water is currently available for residents around Gungas Road and Kirkland Road. Water is being delivered to each household and alternatively there is water available for collection at the Lismore City Council site office at Gungas Road. There is no current timeframe on when pipeline will be restored.
For residents who are unable to have water delivered or collected, there is resupply support that can be logged via the following link

  • LISMORE SEWER SYSTEM UPDATE

Share on Facebook Share on Twitter Share on Linkedin Email this link
With the SES issuing the All Clear for the Lismore CBD, North and South Lismore last night, Council needs our community to reduce our use of the sewage system. All of the CBD, North and South Lismore, Lismore Heights and parts of Girard’s Hill rely on sewage pump stations to dispose of sewage to the South Lismore sewage treatment plant. There are 12 of these pump stations located around those areas and none of them are currently functioning.

These pump stations sustained significant damage as a result of the flood inundation and there is no power supply to any of them. Council staff are working to restore them to operation and also working on an interim solution to manage sewage in these areas. We expect to have some progress on these issues in the next 24 – 48 hours.

In the interim we need our community to limit their usage of the sewer system. We understand this will be challenging and inconvenient as people continue to clean up their properties but will assist greatly in managing the challenge.

As an interim measure Council has arranged portaloos to be placed at different locations in the CBD and South Lismore and is sourcing more today.
We are currently delivering portaloos to the Transit Centre, corner of Keen Street and Woodlark Street, Browns Creek carpark (behind the ANZ bank), near the railway station at South Lismore and Nesbitt Park at South Lismore.

We thank the community for their ongoing patience.

  • Lismore's Water Supply Secure

We are very happy to let the community know that Lismore’s water supply is now secure.

Rous is producing a regular supply of water into the network and the integrity of Lismore City Council’s water networks and infrastructure is now secure. Drinking water is compliant to Australian Drinking Water Guidelines.

This means people cleaning up can now use water pressure cleaning.

Due to storm damage to Nimbin’s water supply, Level 3 Water Restrictions have been introduced, effective immediately.

Restrictions are due to the damage to the pipes that deliver water from Nimbin weir to the storage holding dam. The dam is currently at capacity and Council is exploring options to ensure supply prior, during and post the remediation phase.

The implementation of water restrictions will enable Council to investigate and repair the infrastructure that has been damaged to ensure we can gain access and repair the Nimbin water supply.

  • Minor flooding no longer occurring

The Wilsons River at Lismore fell below the minor flood level (4.20 metres) Sunday morning, based on estimates from upstream gauges.

As the river is now below minor flood levels, this is the final river height update for this event.

Please stay safe during clean-up operations.

Lismore City Council will continue to update the community with other flood related information.

  • Residential clean up

Flood damaged items will be collected from the front of households once the All Clear is given by the SES and utility providers.

Please place items at the front of the kerb.

Remember, the Lismore water supply is running critically low, and we ask that you not to use water to clean your property until Council advises it is okay to do so.

  • No water to rural areas of Nimbin and bottled water

Share on Facebook Share on Twitter Share on Linkedin Email this link

We are currently experiencing issues with the weir at Nimbin.

This has caused our water crew to shut off water for rural parts of Nimbin that is supplied by the Gungas Road weir.

Nimbin township residents still have access to water which was restored yesterday.

There is also water bottles that have been dropped off in Nimbin for residents affected by the Gungas Rd weir issues.

It is unknown how long rural residents of Nimbin will have no water for.

We will provide further updates as soon as possible.
