What work will be undertaken during the timeframe?

    • Site establishment – bringing all plant and machinery to site, setting up caravan and facilities, sediment and erosion control, service location and protection

    • Earthworks to reshape the slip area and embankment behind the road

    • Building of a temporary access platform. This requires the construction of a temporary access road to allow access for the piling rig, that constructs the necessary piles

    • Construction of the road and any necessary drainage.

What hours will there be work on site?

Monday to Fridays:  7am to 5pm

If there is a requirement to increase these hours, the community will be notified.

Why has it taken so long to get to this point?

The 2017 flood caused a number of land slips and this is the most complex site of them all.

Lismore City Council does not have the funds to address such unexpected work. The costs to undertake the work are significant. We therefore need to access funding from the Roads and Maritime Services (RMS) and all works have to be contracted out in line with RMS guidelines for what is called the Natural Disaster Relief and Recovery Arrangements.

There is a strict process that needs to be followed to ensure eligibility and subsequent funding. For example, we are not allowed to use ‘day labour’ ie existing council staff, which means the work has to be contracted out and we are therefore competing with the other local Councils for the same contractors.

Public Works were engaged by RMS to assess all the council claims for this flood event. One person was nominated after the 2017 flood by Public Works to consider all claims for Lismore City Council and surrounding Councils.

Additionally, Lismore LGA has in the order of 1,200km of roads in its road network. After the flood we were required by RMS to engage consultants to inspect that whole road network. This in itself takes a significant period of time. The consultants are required to log and photograph each individual defect and then have to detail type, location and estimate for repairs.

What are the impacts to local residents?

The impacts from the work being carried out may include minor dust, noise, and increase in vehicle and truck movements.

Several roads have been closed since the land slip and this has made things difficult for local residents
