The 2017 flood caused a number of landslips in the Lismore LGA and Oakey Creek Road, Georgica, is the most complex site of all.

There have been some road closures on landslip-affected roads since that time. Council does not have the funds to address such unexpected work as the costs to undertake the work are significant.

We have therefore needed to access funding from the Roads and Maritime Services (RMS) and all works have to be contracted out in line with RMS guidelines for what is called the Natural Disaster Relief and Recovery Arrangements.

There is a strict process that needs to be followed to ensure eligibility and subsequent funding. For example, we are not allowed to use ‘day labour’ (i.e. existing Council staff), which means the work has to be contracted out and we are therefore competing with the other local councils for the same contractors.

The Oakey Creek Road landslip has also been a tricky and complex project from an engineering perspective and this complexity has caused significant delays.

Work is expected to be complete on this project by January 2020.

Regular updates on the progress of this project will be posted in the Community Updates section on the right hand side of this page or in the Latest News updates below.

If you have a question about the project, please post a question through the Q&A tab below and a Council staff member will respond, or you can phone us. A direct contact number can be found under the Who's Listening Section.

Oakey Creek Landslip Repairs – completion of work delayed

We are incredibly sorry to have to inform residents that work on the Oakey Creek Road landslip will take another two to three weeks to complete.

We had hoped to have the road open by mid-January and apologise for this additional inconvenience after such a lengthy project. Contractors have informed us that the recent rain, while very welcome indeed, has delayed the final completion date.

Good stretches of dry weather are required to complete the remaining works including finalisation of the road, bitumen sealing and guard rail installation.

We now expect the road to be open by 21 February 2020 – but again, this is dependent on rain.

Our sincere and heartfelt apologies for this further delay. We are very conscious that people are frustrated and just want the job finished. Our contractors are working as fast as they can to complete the project.

Mountain Top Road Culvert Replacement – start of work delayed

Construction of a temporary side track around the Mountain Top Road culvert was scheduled to commence in mid-January but this work has been delayed.

We now expect the side track to be complete by the end of March. Once it is in place, work on constructing a new bridge will commence. We expect the new bridge to be open by June 2020.

    Oakey Creek Landslip Repairs
Council has been notified by the contractors managing the Oakey Creek Road landslip repairs that the expected completion date for this project is now December 2019. We had planned to finish in January 2020 but contractors are working hard to complete the project sooner and be finished by Christmas.

This has been a very complex and lengthy project and we would like to sincerely thank residents for your patience while these repairs have taken place.

    Mountain Top Road Culvert Replacement
Planning for the Mountain Top Road culvert replacement is now complete. We encountered some unexpected geotechnical issues, and decided to do more investigation work to reduce the possibility of the project encountering delays during construction.

Construction of a temporary side track around the culvert will commence in mid-January and this will provide ongoing access to motorists until a new bridge is constructed.

Once the side track is complete, construction of the new bridge will commence. It is expected to be complete by June 2020.

For those of you that like a little more detail, the latest developments on the Mountain Top Road project are that geotechnical investigations have been done for the construction of the piling platform that is needed on site and also for the temporary traffic diversion track.

Designs have also been completed for the piling platform and the engineers are currently reviewing these designs.

So, overall things are progressing and it should not be too long before you see activity on site.

We told you that works on Mountain Top Road culvert replacement would start in early August. Whilst you will not have seen activity on site yet, there is plenty going on in the background. Discussions are underway with piling contractors and geotechnical engineers to decide on the best approach to this complex project.

A more detailed update from our engineers will be posted before the end of this week. In the meantime, if you have specific questions or concerns you can ask your question via the "Q and A" section above or phone our Community Engagement Officer. Her contact details are on this project page under the 'Who's Listening' section.

Trucks are currently hauling on Jiggi and Gwynne Rd so please be careful! These trucks are bringing in rock that will be placed and compacted as part of the ongoing earthworks. This is in preparation for up and coming piling works. A date for these piling works will be advised in the next update.

  • Members of Community Ignoring Signage and driving through Oakey Creek Work Site

In the last few days, a person on a motor bike and someone driving a car have ignored the signage on Oakey Creek Road and driven onto the work site, whilst contractors were operating heavy machinery.

We are concerned to ensure that all residents stay safe while we complete the essential work on Oakey Creek landslip.

People ignoring signage and driving onto the site could also cause considerable delay to the project.
