Consultation has concluded

Council has received a request to consider applying for a local event day on 19 December 2023, to be known as Widjabul Wia-bal Day. This is in response to Widjabul Wia-bal’s native title application (Federal Court Proceedings NSD1213/2018) which was determined by consent on 19 December 2022 on Country in Goonellabah.

Council is currently seeking community feedback on this request. Submissions received will be included in a report to the September Council meeting, at which councillors will decide if a formal application will be made to the Minister seeking declaration of a Local Event Day.

If this is successful, consultation will follow regarding local event day actions in our community.


What is a local event day?

A local event day is different to a public holiday. A declared local event day does not automatically mean employers in the locality are compelled to treat the day as a public holiday. Entitlements to paid leave or penalty rates will only arise where agreed to at the workplace level, usually in the form of an enterprise agreement or by contract.
