What does 'On Public Exhibition' mean?

When documents are in draft, Council must seek feedback from the community before the final document can be adopted. For example, Council might propose a new plan, strategy or policy and this must go on public exhibition for community feedback before the Council can vote to adopt it.

Draft documents are usually publicly advertised (or 'exhibited') for a period of 28 days and the public are asked to write a submission expressing their views. The document then goes back to another Council meeting, with all the submissions included, to assist Councillors in making amendments and/or adopting a final document.

All community members can make a submission to items on public exhibition online or via email or post. You do not have to be registered as a member of Your Say Lismore to make an online submission.

Where can I find out what is currently on public exhibition?

Items on public exhibition can be found on the Your Say Lismore homepage and you can lodge an online submission at the bottom of the project page.

Council will also advertise items on public exhibition through its fortnightly newsletter, Local Matters, which is delivered to all mailbox and PO boxes within the Lismore Local Government Area. You can also subscribe here to receive Local Matters via email.

    How does Council promote consultations?

Council advertises upcoming consultations through its fortnightly newsletter, Local Matters, which is delivered to all mailbox and PO boxes within the Lismore Local Government Area. You can subscribe here to receive Local Matters via email.

Additionally, we may let people know through local media, advertising in local newspapers or radio, or via Council's social media channels.

We send all our registered Your Say Lismore participants a regular newsletter letting them know what consultations are open or coming up. Register now and join our online community to receive these newsletter updates.

    What happens to my feedback?

The feedback we receive online is provided to Councillors to help them make informed decisions on local issues.

Each consultation provides different forms of community engagement, but all results including submissions or comments online are collated and presented to the decision makers for review and consideration before making a final decision.

Can my comments or submissions remain anonymous?

Some consultations allow anonymous contributions and this will be stated up front.

Most consultations do not allow anonymous contributions because we need to verify that real people are making genuine contributions.

It is important to remember that any comments or submissions to Council may be made publicly available (without identifying contact details) as part of the Council Business Paper.

Can I make a submission to a Development Application on Your Say Lismore?

No. Submissions to Development Applications (DAs) must be made in writing to the General Manager and lodged by the date specified.

If you would like to know how you can make a submission to a Development Application please see Council's Submission Fact Sheet here.

Does Council have a Community Engagement Policy or Strategy?

Council has a Community Engagement Policy that has been endorsed by Council and is on our website. You can locate it here.

A new Community Engagement Strategy is on public exhibition for comment until 20 November and will then go to the 10 December 2019 meeting for endorsement.

For further information please contact the Community Engagement team on 1300 87 83 87 or email engagement@lismore.nsw.gov.au.
