Asbestos products may be found in many buildings and generally are not dangerous if kept in good condition. However, if an asbestos product is broken or disturbed in any way, it is extremely hazardous. Asbestos materials are either bonded (tightly bound) or friable (loosely bound). Bonded asbestos materials are commonly found in houses and often known as ‘fibro’, ‘asbestos cement’ and ‘AC sheeting’.
The recent Flood has had the potential to break and disturb asbestos products. If you suspect you have asbestos in your building, please have it checked by a qualified professional.
    If you have asbestos products:
    - DO NOT move or dump any asbestos materials at this time. Council will communicate when Asbestos waste services are available.
    - If already disturbed wet, double wrap in heavy duty plastic and store until disposal options become available
    - To remove any amount of friable asbestos, or more than 10 square metres of non-friable asbestos from a residence or any business requires a licensed asbestos removalist. Homeowners should NOT remove more than this amount themselves.
SafeWork NSW has waived the five-day notification period for all licensed asbestos removalists undertaking emergency asbestos removal work in flood-affected areas.
Licence holders - please place the following text in the Comments section of your notification: Waiver request relating to flood affected asbestos removal.

The SES have undertaken rapid damage assessment of buildings only. This amounts to a general observation only.

Residents and business owners are required to organise their own structural assessments before premises are occupied.

To organise an inspection, residents should seek the services of a qualified structural engineer or a licensed builder to review the structural suitability of the premise(s).

If a building is insured, please contact the insurance agency, whom may arrange an inspection.

Council is unable to assist with these inspections as we do not have enough structural engineers for the large number of properties damaged.

The SES has given the ALL CLEAR to return to CBD, North Lismore and South Lismore.

    Please continue to use caution.

Some areas within the Lismore Evacuation Zone are still flooded. If you choose to enter these areas, please use extreme caution.

Hundreds of ADF troops and Emergency Services are arriving today to assist with clean up

It is likely that heavy machinery will be used to remove waste and debris. Be prepared to move your vehicles to allow this to happen. If you are not a business owner or resident, you MUST STAY AWAY as you will only be slowing the clean-up efforts.

Tragically, there have been four confirmed deaths. However, several people are still unaccounted for, and search and recovery will be occurring today.

Most importantly, stay safe, be kind to one another and talk to someone if you are struggling.

It is crucial for your own safety and others that no one enters a flood affected area.

The tops of drain manholes have been lifted by flood waters, which means streets with water over them are NOT safe to walk through. For your own safety stay away.

Due to the size of the flood, many buildings may be structurally unsound.

We understand people want to return to their homes and businesses, but we MUST all wait until the SES gives the ALL CLEAR.

Homes and business premises must be inspected by authorities before you return.

There is no sewage in town and no water in parts of the flood-affected areas.

    Please CONSERVE water.

This is no normal flood event, and is region wide. This means Emergency Services are extremely stretched.

Please be patience and for your own safety, DO NOT enter flood affected areas.
