****Johnston Road will be fully open to traffic on Friday 27 August. There are some remaining items to complete this week, such as driveway tie-ins, line marking and general finishing works.

Lismore City Council is undertaking road repairs on Johnston Road, Eltham on a section between Tildon Road and Federation Drive.

The work is scheduled to begin in late May and it will require a section of Johnston Road to be closed to through traffic. A detour will be established via Eltham Road at the commencement of this work and will be maintained for the duration of the project. Work is expected to take 12 weeks to complete.

Residents whose properties are located within the closed section of Johnston Road will continue to have access to their properties during this time but no through access will be available through the construction site.

Council will ensure all driveways and farm gates that intersect the road match any changes to the road profile and are safe for property owners/residents.

What are the works?

The roadworks involve reconstruction of a 350 metre section.

This includes the following work:

  • Clearing of vegetation and trees
  • Excavation and removal of the existing road surface
  • Installation of new drainage culverts and associated items
  • Installation of kerb and gutter
  • Construction of shoulder widenings
  • Road surface construction – gravel placement
  • Road surface construction – bitumen seal
  • Signage and line marking

Work hours will be as follows:

  • 6am to 6pm Monday to Friday.
  • 8am to 1pm on Saturdays (when required).
  • No work Sundays or public holidays.

If there is a requirement to change these hours, residents will be notified.

What are the traffic adjustments?

All traffic will be detoured around the site via Eltham Road and Bangalow Road (see detour map on right hand side of this project page).

Please commute through the detour at low speed, obey adjusted speed limits and directions from any traffic controllers, and drive carefully.

At times the roadworks may create dust, which will be managed by a water cart during work hours.

Johnston Road continues to be closed until the end of August and the detour is still in place. Residents should not enter the area as there will be deep excavations and steep drop offs.

Large amounts of truck movements are happening daily and we are now at the stage of placing rock foundation.

Work is progressing as planned on the Johnston Road repairs.

Pre-construction activities such as compound set up, clearing works, drainage culvert construction and erosion and sediment controls are currently being undertaken. The majority of the works are currently focused on completing the drainage aspect of the project to allow road reconstruction works to commence. Drainage works are estimated to take 1-2 weeks.

The current program suggests an approximate 10-week construction time frame. Our schedule is on track and, at this stage, we have experienced no unforeseen delays.
