Hi, Is any information available regarding the impacts (EG: increased foot traffic on Cullen St) of this project?

We don’t anticipate the project to increase foot traffic in Nimbin (like a new tourist attraction or event might), rather, support and enhance the amenity that already exists. We have undertaken a Local Area Traffic Management plan to gather metrics around vehicle and pedestrian activities on Cullen Street and will be using the Great Public Spaces evaluation tool to measure the impact of pedestrian walkability throughout the village. This information will be available at the end of the project’s trial period, scheduled for early 2024.

We are aware of the issues around the pedestrian crossing and this project will act as a trial to implement traffic calming strategies to address some of those concerns. We are unable to move the crossing at this stage but are hoping that the metrics gathered through this project will support big changes to Nimbin’s road and streetscape into the future to keep pedestrians and motorists safe.

Council’s Project Management Team and Traffic Advisory Committee considered numerous site locations to support the current pedestrian safety trials within Nimbin. It should be noted that it has been decided not to trial additional pedestrian crossing but rather trial a slower speed environment through additional traffic calming devices.  The current locations were selected to ensure it provided sufficient opportunity to measure the benefit during the trial period, encompassing not only locals, businesses and tourism usage. The data gathered from this trial will hopefully inform a future permanent solution.
