The Urban Green Corridors Plan (UGCP) is part of Lismore City Council's Biodiversity Management Strategy, aiming to protect and restore our urban biodiversity. It creates a network of wildlife corridors across Lismore and Goonellabah, connecting existing urban bushland areas to larger regional corridors. This network helps maintain a healthy, thriving environment in the city.

The plan is now due for its first review and Council is working with Earthscapes Consulting to assess its effectiveness. Your feedback will be used to revise the plan for the next 10 years (2025-2035), ensuring it meets community needs and continues to protect our natural spaces.

Why Review the Plan?

The review will help us understand:

  • Whether the 2017 plan’s goals have been met
  • How the plan and its implementation can be improved going forward
  • Where the corridors can be expanded or strengthened
  • The impact of recent changes, like the flood-risk areas, which could provide new opportunities for green spaces, public areas, and environmental restoration.

What’s Changed Since 2017?

Since the 2017 plan, several key developments have occurred for the urban green corridors:

  • More than 56 hectares of council-managed urban bushland have been regenerated.
  • Over 26 hectares of rainforest have been replanted, with strong community involvement.
  • Condition assessments of bushland reserves show many sites have improved, though challenges remain including garden dumping and invasive species.

Proposed Updates to the Plan

Detailed in the Discussion Paper, the revised plan proposes updates to some areas of the Plan, including:

  • First Nations Knowledge: We will incorporate cultural guidance and actions in consultation with local First Nations groups.
  • Mapping Updates: Changes to corridor boundaries based on new opportunities and land use changes, such as the flood buyback areas.
  • Ecological and Cultural Fire: Cool fire will be considered as a restoration tool to maintain open forests and cultural landscapes.
  • Climate Change: The plan will address how the corridors can help us adapt to climate impacts, such as extreme weather and flooding.
