The Fixing Country Bridges Program has been developed to provide funding for timber bridge replacements across regional and rural NSW.

Lismore City Council will replace 10 ageing wooden bridges across the LGA, thanks to almost $10 million in funding under Round 1 of the State Government's Fixing Country Bridges Program (a NSW State Government initiative that aims to create a new legacy for our local road network, enabling councils to replace hundreds of timber bridges in poor condition and better connect regional and rural communities).

The wooden bridges will be replaced with concrete bridges, making them safer and more resilient to natural disasters.

These bridges are important access routes for local farming families and also link our villages and allow residents to easily travel to their jobs, schools and hospitals.

What are the works?

The ten bridges to be replaced are:

  • Boomerang Creek Bridge, Rosebank Road, Corndale
  • Dudgeon Bridge, Dudgeon Road, Keerrong
  • Greens Bridge, Stony Chute Road, Nimbin
  • Hensen Road Bridge, Hensen Road, Nimbin
  • Pearces Creek Bridge, Eltham Road (In collaboration with Ballina Shire Council)
  • Ridgewood Bridge, Mackie Road, Rosebank
  • Sexton Bridge, Gundarimba Road, Monaltrie
  • Town Bridge, Terania Creek
  • Tucki Creek Bridge, Mathieson Lane, Marom Creek
  • Walsh Bridge, Rosehill Road, Blakebrook

The Federal Government has also contributed $300,000 towards the replacement of Bungabbee Bridge, and additional funding for replacing Town Bridge.

When will the works take place?

Work on these bridges commenced in 2022 and factoring in the delays caused by the February & March 2022 Natural Disasters, the anticipated completion of the reconstructions is due by mid-2023 .

Information will be distributed to nearby residents, as it becomes available. The new structures will be constructed alongside existing timber bridges. This will allow vehicle access to maintained throughout the duration of the project, with traffic control in place.

Council is pleased to announce the Walsh Bridge replacement project is scheduled to commence on Monday, 4 September 2023, with work continuing into the middle of 2024, subject to fine weather conditions and contractor availability.

Location of Walsh Bridge construction site, Rosehill Road, Tuncester

    What are the works?

The Walsh Bridge replacement project is aimed at replacing the existing aged timber bridge with a new reinforced concrete structure of sufficient width to provide for two lane traffic. This will involve installation of new sub and super structures in order to provide a durable, cost-effective structure with a 100-year design life.

We also plan to rebuild the road up to the new bridge abutments, which will realign the road to remove the existing eastern end 90-degree bend and will improve site distances from the eastern end approach.

    What are the traffic adjustments?

The existing bridge will be open to traffic whilst the construction of the new bridge is being completed. However, there will be temporary traffic control measures in place with some delays periodically during the day. The 5T load limit on the existing bridge will remain in place.

What do I need to do?

Please commute through the worksite at low speed, obey adjusted speed limits and directions from any traffic controllers, and drive carefully. We would appreciate your cooperation with all traffic control and workplace protection measures to help keep everyone safe.

The scheduled works for the Town Bridge replacement have been delayed in light of recent construction issues experienced onsite.

    What has caused the delay?

Piling works have recently been completed which included the installation of four bored, reinforced concrete piles. Unfortunately, two of the piles are defective and do not meet the design requirements of the project. As a result, these two piles need to be abandoned and can no longer form part of the bridge structure.

What does this mean for the project?

The next step for the project will be a partial re-design of the bridge structure including the piles and abutments. During this time, there will be no works performed onsite. Council is working closely with our contractors and consultants to resolve these issues as soon as possible. Once the re-design has been completed, construction works will recommence and will include additional piling works, construction of the abutments and installation of the new steel bridge. No additional project costs are anticipated as a result of these issues or the additional works outlined.

Unfortunately, it is likely the re-design and additional piling will result in an approximate three-month delay to the completion of the project. However, we remain confident that the new bridge will be completed by Christmas.

What do I need to do?

Please continue to use the temporary access road at low speed, obey adjusted speed limits and drive carefully.

Who should I contact with questions/ concerns?

We apologise for this un-planned delay and will provide a further update prior to works recommencing onsite. If you have any concerns, please call our Capital Works Engineer, Steven Bennetts on (02) 6625 0500 or email council@lismore.nsw.gov.au and include the title ‘Town Bridge Replacement project'.

When are the works taking place?

Council staff have completed the design and investigation phase of this project and are planning to commence works in late June 2023.

Why has a load limit been placed on the bridge?

As part of our normal bridge maintenance and inspection routines Council engaged a third-party engineering consultant to undertake a Level 2 Bridge Inspection. The report is currently being finalised, however immediate advice from the consultant recommended Council place a 5-tonne load limit on the bridge. This is aimed at minimising further deterioration of the bridge until the new bridge is constructed.

Other safety measures and temporary works may also be required to prevent further deterioration and Council will advise further if this should be the case.

    What are the traffic adjustments?

Whilst Council works to replace Walsh Bridge, a detour will be in place for vehicles over 5-tonne, we ask that affected motorists use the detour that is signed and in place via Nimbin Road over this period.
