Council understands that it will take our community a long time to recover from the 2022 floods. To assist, our Built Environment team has prepared a fact sheet about a temporary accommodation ‘option’ for residents who have been displaced from their homes as a result of the flood.
People who have been displaced from their homes as a result of the flood can install a moveable dwelling, such as a caravan, on land without Council’s approval for up to two years.

To allow Essential Energy carry out crucial work, Traffic Control will be in place tomorrow (Tuesday, 15 March) to divert traffic from entering the CBD between 6am and 6pm.

This includes part closures of Magellan, Keen, Woodlark and Molesworth streets.

Traffic will be able to come over the bridge and turn left to the police station.

Business owners can enter once directed by Traffic Control.

This significant work is the first step in a long process needed to secure the long-term safe and reliable power supply to the 700-plus business customers throughout the affected CBD.

We thank you for your patience as we carry out this important repair.

Public Works Advisory continues to coordinate the Clean Up of flood waste from flood affected areas of Northern Rivers NSW, including the Lismore LGA.

So far the Clean Up has prioritised the Lismore CBD and main roads in/out of Lismore (including North, East and South Lismore).

Clean Up has also begun in our neighbouring LGAs as flood waters receded.

For our LGA, the Clean Up is now moving beyond the main streets in the CBD, North Lismore, East Lismore and South Lismore.

The Clean Up will then move into rural areas as crews become available. Plans are currently being developed for how the rural Clean Up will be staged, and you will be kept updated once plans are finalised.

The entire Clean Up of Lismore and its villages is a phased approach, which means Clean Up crews will return again after the initial waste removal.

To assist with this huge task, we ask businesses and property owners who still have flood waste material that needs to be disposed of from upper levels of their buildings to contact Council on 6625 0500.

This will allow us to create a register so that waste removal and collection can be prioritised as subsequent rounds of clean up take place.

We thank the community for their patience during this massive Clean Up effort.

As floodwater is subsiding across Northern NSW, the Local Land Services is reminding landholders and members of the public to report deceased livestock to the Agriculture and Animal Services hotline.

Due to the nature and sheer scale of these floods, it is very hard to predict where deceased animals will be found, some can be washed hundreds of kilometres away.

Deceased livestock do pose a human health risk, but by reporting them immediately, work will be done to remove them as quickly as possible and reduce the risk of disease and contamination.

For landholders needing animal assessment and disposal, or members of the public who encounter a deceased animal can report it to the Agriculture and Animal Services hotline on 1800 814 647.

As floodwater is subsiding across Northern NSW, the North Coast Public Health Unit is reminding residents and visitors to protect themselves from mosquitoes.

In addition to Ross River and Barmah Forest viruses, NSW Health is also warning the public of more serious conditions carried by mosquitoes, following confirmation of two Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV) cases in NSW.

JEV can cause severe neurological illness with headache, convulsions and reduced consciousness in some cases.

To minimise the risk of mosquito bites:
    • Cover up as much as possible when outside. Wear light-coloured, loose-fitting clothing and covered footwear.
    • Use an effective repellent on all exposed skin. Re-apply repellent within a few hours, as protection wears off with perspiration. The best mosquito repellents contain Diethyl Toluamide (DEET) or Picaridin. Those containing oil of lemon eucalyptus also provide adequate protection.
    • Use mosquito coils outdoors. Devices that use light to attract and electrocute insects are not effective.
    • Cover all windows, doors, vents and other entrances with insect screens.
    • If staying in tents or caravans, use flyscreens on caravans and tents or sleep under mosquito nets.
